Crispy, delicious air fryer onion strings made with buttermilk and a perfect seasoned coating. A healthier alternative to deep-fried onion rings that’s just as tasty.
Ingredients

- 2 large sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla, or Maui preferred)
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- Cooking spray
- Seasoning to taste
Instructions
- Slice onions very thinly using a mandoline or sharp knife
- Soak sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes
- Mix flour and seasonings in a shallow dish
- Coat onion strings in seasoned flour mixture
- Place in air fryer basket in single layers, avoiding overcrowding
- Spray generously with cooking oil
- Air fry until golden and crispy
- Serve immediately
Notes
- For dairy-free buttermilk substitute, use regular milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar per cup
- For gluten-free version, use 1:1 gluten-free flour blend with ¼ teaspoon xanthan gum
- Best served fresh, but can be kept warm in 200°F oven
- Ensure onions are very thinly sliced for best results
