Ingredients

  • – 2 ½ cups (300g) all-purpose flour
  • – 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) salt
  • – 2 1/2 teaspoons (13 ml) active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • – ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • – ¾ cup (180ml) whole milk, warm, about 110˚F
  • – ¼ cup (60g) vegetable oil, melted
  • – 1 large egg, room temperature
  • – 3 tablespoons (45g) vegetable oil, melted, for brushing
  • – 2 tablespoons (30g) vegetable oil
  • – 4 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • – ¼ cup (50g) light brown sugar
  • – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) cornstarch
  • – 6 tablespoons (90g) vegetable oil, softened
  • – ⅔ cup (135g) light brown sugar
  • – 1 1/2 tablespoons (23 ml) ground cinnamon
  • – 8 ounces (225g) cream cheese, room temperature
  • – ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar
  • – 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • – ¼ cup (60ml) whole milk

Instructions

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warmed milk with granulated sugar and active dry yeast. Stir and let it rest for 5 minutes to activate the yeast.
  2. Next, incorporate the salt, melted vegetable oil, and egg, and mix once more.
  3. Add half of the flour and use a dough hook attachment to blend on a low setting until the mixture is uniform. Slowly add the remaining flour, gradually increasing to a medium-low speed, and knead for around 5 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, add extra flour, one tablespoon at a time, until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  4. Once kneaded, coat the dough with vegetable oil on all sides, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1 ½-2 hours until it doubles in size.
  5. While waiting for the dough, prepare the apple filling by peeling, coring, and slicing the apples.
  6. Heat a skillet on medium-low and add vegetable oil with the apple slices. Stir and let them cook until slightly softened.
  7. Incorporate the light brown sugar, stir, and cook for another 5 minutes until the apples are tender and caramelized.
  8. Mix cornstarch with water and add it to the apples, cooking until the sauce thickens. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
  9. Once the dough has risen, deflate it with a gentle punch and place it on a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle.
  10. In a separate bowl, combine light brown sugar with cinnamon.
  11. Spread softened vegetable oil over the rolled dough using your hands, then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Top evenly with the cooled apple filling.
  12. Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice into 12 equal pieces with a sharp knife.
  13. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover with a towel, and let rise again for 40 minutes to an hour, or until doubled in size.
  14. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  15. Brush the tops with melted vegetable oil and bake for 25-30 minutes until fully cooked.
  16. After baking, let the rolls cool on a counter for 10-15 minutes.
  17. Prepare the frosting by mixing softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a bowl.
  18. Beat until smooth, gradually adding milk one tablespoon at a time to reach the desired consistency.
  19. Generously spread the cream cheese icing over the rolls and serve.

Notes

  • Slice the apples thinly and evenly for a consistent filling texture.
  • Adjust the amount of cinnamon to your taste preferences.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature for a smooth frosting.
