Description
Crispy, golden Amish onion fritters with a tender interior, perfect as an appetizer or side dish. These traditional fritters feature sweet onions in a seasoned buttermilk batter.

- 2 cups sweet onions, thinly sliced
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried herbs (thyme or parsley)
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, and dried herbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.
- Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
- Fold in thinly sliced onions until evenly coated with batter.
- Heat 1/2 inch of oil in a heavy skillet to 350°F.
- Drop tablespoons of batter into hot oil, flattening slightly with the back of the spoon.
- Fry for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add 1-2 tablespoons of finely chopped fresh herbs.
- Sweet Vidalia onions work especially well in this recipe.
- Serve with sour cream or homemade ranch dressing for dipping.
