Description
Crispy honey garlic tofu features extra-firm tofu coated in cornstarch and fried to perfection, all drenched in a delicious honey garlic sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 block (14-16 ounces) of extra-firm tofu
- ½ cup of cornstarch
- ¼ cup of soy sauce (low-sodium optional)
- 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
- ¼ cup of honey (maple syrup or agave nectar for a vegan alternative)
- 4–5 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger, grated
- ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 teaspoon of sesame oil
- About ½ cup of cooking oil (like canola, vegetable, or avocado oil)
- Optional garnishes: sesame seeds and sliced green onions
Instructions
- Press the tofu to reduce moisture for at least 30 minutes.
- Cut the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes.
- Coat the tofu pieces in cornstarch.
- Prepare the honey garlic sauce by combining the soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, garlic, ginger, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes in a small bowl.
- Heat cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
- Add the coated tofu in a single layer to the hot oil, avoiding overcrowding.
- Fry the tofu for about 5-7 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove the tofu and drain excess oil on paper towels.
- Pour the honey garlic sauce into the skillet and bring it to a simmer.
- Toss the crispy tofu in the sauce until evenly coated.
- Serve hot, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.
Notes
For best results, fry tofu in smaller batches to achieve maximum crispiness.
