  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (plus extra for greasing)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs (beaten)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 8 cups day-old bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with unsalted butter.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  3. Whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a separate bowl.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate into the egg mixture and whisk until fully incorporated.
  5. Add the cubed bread to the chocolate mixture, gently folding it in until all the bread is coated. Allow it to soak for about 10-15 minutes as the bread absorbs the custard.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes until the top is set and golden, and the center is slightly wobbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For enhanced flavor, consider adding espresso powder or chopped nuts. Serve with heavy cream or ice cream for an indulgent treat.
