Description
A comforting dessert combining rich dark chocolate and day-old bread for a delightful, custardy experience.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12 oz dark chocolate (preferably 70% cacao)
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter (plus extra for greasing)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 4 eggs (beaten)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch of salt
- 8 cups day-old bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with unsalted butter.
- Melt the dark chocolate and butter together in a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- Whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt in a separate bowl.
- Pour the melted chocolate into the egg mixture and whisk until fully incorporated.
- Add the cubed bread to the chocolate mixture, gently folding it in until all the bread is coated. Allow it to soak for about 10-15 minutes as the bread absorbs the custard.
- Transfer the mixture to the greased baking dish and spread it evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-45 minutes until the top is set and golden, and the center is slightly wobbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
For enhanced flavor, consider adding espresso powder or chopped nuts. Serve with heavy cream or ice cream for an indulgent treat.
