Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (300g)
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (226g)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar (400g)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk (240ml)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) white vinegar
  • For the glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (120g)
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons milk (30-45ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C).
  2. Grease and flour a pound cake pan.
  3. In a bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  4. In a separate large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  5. Gradually add the granulated sugar to the butter, beating until light and fluffy.
  6. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. In a small bowl, combine the milk and white vinegar; set aside for a few minutes.
  9. Alternately add the flour mixture and the milk mixture to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
  10. Mix until just combined and smooth.
  11. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan, spreading evenly.
  12. Bake for 60-70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  13. Let the cake cool in the pan for 15 minutes.
  14. Remove the cake from the pan and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  15. For the glaze, mix powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  16. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake.
  17. Allow the glaze to set before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the butter is softened to room temperature for a smooth texture in the cake batter.
  • Opt for whole milk to enhance the richness of the cake’s flavor.
  • Adjust the glaze consistency by adding more milk for a thinner glaze or more powdered sugar for a thicker texture.
