Description

A rich and hearty stew made with tender beef, caramelized onions, and topped with Gruyere cheese and crusty bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into cubes
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
  • 4 slices of crusty bread

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Season the beef with salt and pepper, then add it to the pot with the onions. Brown the beef on all sides.
  3. Stir in the garlic, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaf.
  4. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 90-120 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Ladle the stew into bowls, top each with a slice of bread, and sprinkle with Gruyere cheese.
  7. Place the bowls on a baking sheet and bake in the oven until the cheese is bubbly, about 10 minutes.
  8. Serve hot.

Notes

For best results, take your time caramelizing the onions. Adjust seasonings throughout the cooking process for optimal flavor balance.
