Description

Delicious homemade mashed potatoes with rich beef gravy – a perfect comfort food that can be prepared ahead of time. Made with Yukon Gold potatoes for the creamiest texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut potatoes into 1-inch chunks. Place in a large pot and cover with cold water.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. While potatoes cook, brown the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Add diced onions to the beef and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the meat mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth, stirring continuously to prevent lumps.
  7. Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme. Simmer until thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  8. Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly and return to the hot pot.
  9. Add butter, milk, and sour cream. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper.
  10. Serve the mashed potatoes topped with hot beef gravy.

Notes

  • For make-ahead preparation, refrigerate the mashed potatoes and gravy separately and reheat before serving.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes create the creamiest texture, but russet potatoes can be used as well.
  • For extra richness, add more butter or replace some milk with heavy cream.
