- 1 tablespoon olive oil (or any neutral oil)
- 1 medium onion (chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 4 cups potatoes (thinly sliced, preferably Yukon Gold or Russet)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or Monterey Jack)
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked offers extra flavor)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup beef broth (or water)
- 1/4 cup milk (optional for creaminess)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes until it softens.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- In a greased baking dish, layer the thinly sliced potatoes evenly.
- Pour the meat mixture over the potatoes, spreading it out to cover them completely.
- Pour the beef broth (or water) over the entire dish to keep it moist during baking.
- If desired, mix the milk into the shredded cheese and sprinkle it evenly over the top. Add Parmesan cheese if using.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 40-45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly.
- Let it cool slightly, sprinkle with fresh parsley (if using), and serve warm.
