Description

A comforting casserole featuring ground beef, layers of tender potatoes, and a cheesy top, perfect for cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef (or ground turkey for a lighter option)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (or any neutral oil)
  • 1 medium onion (chopped)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 4 cups potatoes (thinly sliced, preferably Yukon Gold or Russet)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or Monterey Jack)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon paprika (smoked offers extra flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 1/4 cup milk (optional for creaminess)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 3-4 minutes until it softens.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the ground beef (or turkey) to the skillet. Season with salt, pepper, Italian seasoning, and paprika. Cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  5. In a greased baking dish, layer the thinly sliced potatoes evenly.
  6. Pour the meat mixture over the potatoes, spreading it out to cover them completely.
  7. Pour the beef broth (or water) over the entire dish to keep it moist during baking.
  8. If desired, mix the milk into the shredded cheese and sprinkle it evenly over the top. Add Parmesan cheese if using.
  9. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 40-45 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly.
  11. Let it cool slightly, sprinkle with fresh parsley (if using), and serve warm.

Notes

Optional: Experiment with different cheeses and add vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for variations.
