Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes, preferably Russets or Yukon Gold
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (such as sharp cheddar or Gruyère)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs for topping
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for greasing and flavor

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and chop the potatoes into chunks. Place them in a large pot filled with salted water.
  3. Boil the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain and return to the pot.
  4. Mash the potatoes until smooth. Add heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, if using. Blend until the mixture is creamy.
  5. Fold in the cheese until well combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish.
  7. In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the potatoes.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Notes

For an extra crispy top, increase the baking time or place under the broiler for a few minutes. Consider adding herbs or crispy bacon for enhanced flavor.
