- 2 pounds potatoes, preferably Russets or Yukon Gold
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2 cups shredded cheese (such as sharp cheddar or Gruyère)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs for topping
- 2 tablespoons butter, for greasing and flavor
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel and chop the potatoes into chunks. Place them in a large pot filled with salted water.
- Boil the potatoes for about 15-20 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain and return to the pot.
- Mash the potatoes until smooth. Add heavy cream, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg, if using. Blend until the mixture is creamy.
- Fold in the cheese until well combined.
- Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish.
- In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs with melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the potatoes.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
For an extra crispy top, increase the baking time or place under the broiler for a few minutes. Consider adding herbs or crispy bacon for enhanced flavor.
