Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Press the dough evenly into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly golden. Cool completely.
  6. For the frosting, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla, beating until creamy.
  7. Divide frosting into three portions. Leave one white, color one red, and one blue.
  8. Spread the frosting in decorative patriotic patterns on the cooled cookie base.
  9. Refrigerate until set, then cut into bars or use cookie cutters for festive shapes.
