  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups (200g) crushed pretzels
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon (5 ml) onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vegetable oil
  • For the Mustard Cheddar Sauce:
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk
  • 1 cup (120g) shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3 ml) garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1 ml) black pepper
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Place the chicken breasts between two sheets of plastic wrap.
  3. Pound the chicken to an even thickness using a meat mallet.
  4. In a shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, and salt.
  5. In another shallow dish, beat the eggs.
  6. In a third shallow dish, place the crushed pretzels.
  7. Dredge each chicken breast in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  8. Dip the chicken into the beaten eggs, allowing excess to drip off.
  9. Press the chicken into the crushed pretzels, coating evenly.
  10. Heat the vegetable oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat.
  11. Add the chicken breasts to the skillet and cook until browned on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  12. Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven.
  13. Bake the chicken for 10-12 minutes, or until fully cooked and no longer pink inside.
  14. While the chicken bakes, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  15. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minute.
  16. Gradually whisk in the milk, cooking until the mixture thickens.
  17. Add the shredded cheddar cheese, stirring until melted and smooth.
  18. Stir in the Dijon mustard, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  19. Season the sauce with salt to taste.
  20. Remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes.
  21. Serve the chicken with the mustard cheddar sauce drizzled on top.

Notes

  • Consider adding a pinch of cayenne to the flour for a subtle heat.
  • For extra crispiness, use panko breadcrumbs instead of crushed pretzels.
  • Customize the mustard cheddar sauce with a splash of hot sauce or lemon juice for a tangy flavor.
